What is Androgenic Alopecia?
Writtent by Janna Mustafina, MSN, FNP-C
March, 2020
The most common cause of hair loss is androgenic alopecia. Androgenic alopecia is also called " baldness" or " male/female pattern baldness". It is a gradual and steady hair loss, most of the time, in a certain pattern. Males due to the higher level of testosterone are affected more than females.
It is unfortunate but hair loss in males can start anytime, even in the teenage years.
What is the pathophysiology of this process? Why does this happen, and is hair loss preventable? The process of hair loss starts with breaking down of testosterone. Male hormone testosterone breaks down in the testes and prostate. Testosterone is converted into DHT (androgen hormone) by action of 5-alpha reductase enzyme. DHT is the most potent androgen that can shrink hair follicles, shorten their cycle, make hair thinner, and, eventually, make hair fall out.
Finasteride (medication) is 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It inhibits the action of 5-alpha reductase enzyme which blocks testosterone and prevents it's conversion.
Therefore, taking Finasteride will result in stopping the cycle of hair loss. The table below is a classification/stages of hair loss. Providers use this classification to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment. The goal of the treatment is to stop hair loss. Hair regrowth may or may not happen and Finasteride does not act as a hair regrowth agent.
At eCareNow TeleHealth we offer consultations for hair loss treatment. Our providers prescribe Finasteride 1mg and Finasteride 1.25mg. We also prescribe compounded topical agents which facilitate the hair regrowth process.
1. Hair restore lite.

Hair restore lite comes in a 60mL dropper bottle. The solution contains Minoxidil 5% and Azelaic Acid 12.5%.
Minoxidil was initially introduced as an effective treatment for high blood pressure. Patients that used Minoxidil for an extended period observed renewed hair growth in aread where they had lost it. Subsequent research confirmed that just 2% solution of Minoxidil could stimulate hair growth when it was applied directly to the scalp.
Azelaic Acid is known as an acne treatment medication. However, studies on hair regrow treatment observed that Azelaic Acid also prevents 5-alpha reductase enzymes from binding to testosterone.
Hair restore lite solution needs to be applied to hair receding lines, and bald scalp areas every evening and gently rub it in.
2. Hair restore Ultra.

Hair restore ultra comes in a 60mL doppler bottle. The solution contains Minoxidil 5%, Azelaic Acid 12.5%, Finasteride 0.1%, and Ketoconazole 2%. Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal solution that inhibits synthesis of testosterone in low doses.
